How to Practice Self-Care as a Busy Woman: Priority One is YOU!

Ever find yourself stretched thin with no time to spare for a little self-indulgence? Perhaps you're juggling work deadlines, attending to your children, or fulfilling commitments with friends. When life becomes a series of back-to-back appointments, carving out time for yourself often falls by the wayside.

However, neglecting self-care is not a practice to take lightly. It involves dedicating time to nurture yourself, replenish your energy reserves, and prevent burnout.

With National Self-Care Day approaching on April 5th, consider this your signal to prioritize your mental well-being.

Here are a few strategies to incorporate self-care into your busy schedule. If you aspire to lead a content and gratifying life, there's simply no excuse for neglecting your mental health.

  1. Set clear boundaries

Much like many individuals, I grapple with the tendency to please others and struggle with declining requests. There have been countless occasions where I've regretted my weekend choices come Monday, feeling completely drained after overcommitting myself.

In order to prioritize my own well-being, I've learned to set clear boundaries around my time and decline commitments that don't align with my priorities. This might involve turning down occasional invitations for late-night gatherings with friends or non-urgent work calls in the evening. Often, I've discovered that by articulating the importance of having time to myself, people are understanding and respectful of my boundaries.

I'm not advocating for skipping out on every social engagement in favor of solitude, but occasionally opting out of gatherings is perfectly acceptable. Social events will always be there, and your friends will come to respect your boundaries if you communicate them clearly.

Similarly, it's entirely reasonable to request that your workplace refrain from contacting you after certain hours or when you're off-duty. By standing firm on this boundary, they will find alternative solutions. Remember, you can also block out time in your schedule to reinforce these boundaries. Set your status to Busy to indicate that you are unavailable and should not be disturbed.

  1. Make the most of idle time throughout your day

Let's face it. The perfect opportunity for self-care may never magically appear when you're swamped with a myriad of tasks on your schedule. Sometimes, you have to seize whatever time you can find, no matter how brief it may be.

Even though your commute to work might not seem like an ideal moment for self-care, it's important not to overlook it. If you're on a bustling subway, consider donning noise-cancelling headphones and listening to a meditation or relaxation soundtrack. If you're driving to work, try tuning in to a motivational podcast to energize you for the day ahead.

Your lunch break presents another chance to prioritize self-care. Take a brisk walk around the block or seek out a serene spot in your office to engage in meditation or deep-breathing exercises. If you're situated in a business district, explore nearby options for a quick massage session during your lunch break. Look for a gym nearby where you can squeeze in a brief workout—even a short session of stretching on a gym mat can be remarkably refreshing.

The aim is to make the most of those small snippets of time that are already dispersed throughout your day.

  1. Establish good morning and evening routines

How you kick off and wind down your day significantly influences your mindset and productivity in between. Even amid a hectic schedule, you can incorporate small practices to enhance your mornings and evenings.

Begin by integrating a few simple self-care rituals into your daily routine. While getting ready in the morning, repeat positive affirmations to yourself. If you're prone to forgetting, jot down a few affirmations on a Post-it note and affix them to your bathroom mirror.

Consider your objectives for the day. What are you excited about? What do you aim to accomplish? Quickly jot down these thoughts in a to-do list—putting your tasks in writing can help ease the mental burden of remembering them throughout the day.

During the evenings, dedicate five minutes to unwind by reflecting on your achievements, no matter how small. Record a few things you're grateful for in a gratitude journal.

Make an effort to reduce your phone usage—this will aid in clearing your mind and promoting quicker bedtime. Achieving a good night's sleep is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself, and with a well-crafted evening routine, it will become effortless.

  1. Ask your support network for help

There's no shame in reaching out to the people in your circle for assistance. Regardless of how overwhelming your workload may seem, remember that there's always someone who can help lighten the load, even if only temporarily.

Consider asking your partner or a family member to watch over your children for an afternoon while you enjoy some much-needed alone time. If you have a friend or acquaintance with some free time during the week, why not inquire if they could assist you with dropping off or picking up your children from their extracurricular activities?

If you're feeling overwhelmed at work, discuss with your manager to determine which meetings are essential for you to attend and which ones they or someone else on your team could cover for you. Your manager's role includes helping you manage your workload more effectively, so don't hesitate to ask for assistance in better managing your time.

Don't shy away from delegating tasks or responsibilities that don't necessarily require your attention.

Consider exploring meal delivery services to simplify your dinner preparations – meal delivery options have evolved significantly, offering healthy choices. Having a stash of pre-made meals in the fridge can be incredibly convenient for evenings when you prefer to unwind in a hot bath and destress.

If household chores are consuming too much of your free time, think about hiring a cleaner for occasional deep cleaning sessions. You could opt to have someone tackle only the most challenging areas of your home, such as bathrooms and kitchen appliances, to minimize costs. You'll be surprised at how much time and energy this can save you.
